In Memoriam
June 27, 1942 - September 18, 2018
Paul Alex Bennett lost his long battle with cancer at his home in Victoria, BC.
Over his ten year period as a life member of the Jasper Artists Guild, Paul provided seasonal, in person support as he enthusiastically welcomed visitors to JAG's Brushfire Gallery in Jasper's historic fire hall. He continued to provide part-time support from his winter studio in Victoria, BC.
JAG benefited greatly from Paul's lifelong experience as a journalist. His passion for JAG and the Jasper art community came through clearly in his writings about our group's history and activities. Paul's contributions and personality will live on in our hearts.
Artist Statement
I strive to reveal in paint my reaction to a location on the special day I was there. It’s a search for strong composition and bold colour, using imagination and creativity to take my work beyond the ordinary. While I use my own photographs and sketches for studio work (on rainy days!), most of my creations start as plein air paintings.
Painting almost daily over the past 15 years, I have built up a solid body of landscapes in acrylics and mixed watermedia. Summers I paint in and around Jasper, Alberta; the rest of the year with the Peninsula Plein Air Painters around Victoria, B.C.
Collectors from around the world own my work. Recent buyers are from New York, Spain and Ireland.
Painting alone or with fellow outdoor painters is achallenge and an adventure. Solving a jigsaw puzzle with blank pieces, I'm always excited by the creation of each painting.
