"Do You Know What I Mean?"
A PhotoVoice Project at Brushfire Gallery

On Saturday Nov 29th from 2pm to 4pm, the Jasper Adult Learning Council and 16 Days Of Activism Committee proudly hosted the PhotoVoice project “Do you know what I mean?”, an exhibit that explores the issues of the sex trade through women's photographs and stories.

A group of five women participated in the research method of PhotoVoice to give voice and images to their untold stories.  This exhibit was an important opportunity for us as individuals, agencies and community to ‘see’ the voices of our fellow citizens who, for complex and unique reasons, walk a very difficult and different path, one we do not often get the opportunity to directly learn about.

“Do you know what I mean?” was made possible through a partnership between the University of Calgary’s Social Work Department and the Calgary United Way.

About the gallery

Situated in the geographical centre of Jasper National Park and surrounded by 4,200 square miles of verdant wilderness, the environs of Jasper townsite are a mecca for artists and those with an appreciation of nature's unspoiled places.  Recognized by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site, Jasper attracts many artists who strive to spread the message of environmental integrity through their art.  Others benefit from direct interaction with visitors from the global art community who choose Jasper as their destination and provide a bridge to new happenings in the international art world.

In recent years, the Jasper Artists Guild has made it its mission to increase awareness of the visual fine arts in Jasper by supporting the development of an artistic community.  As active exhibitors, the Guild has founded it's own gallery and exhibits original art in cafes, restaurants and local businesses for the enjoyment of all.  The introduction of frequently rotating fine art displays to these locations has added a dynamic new element to Jasper's already visually stunning vistas.

Jasper and the Jasper Artists Guild welcomes you to our exciting community and hopes you will take home happy, art filled memories of your time in the Rockies.
