Paul Bennett
I’m always looking for the ‘wow’ factor to take my painting beyond the ordinary. Working solidly over the past 15 years, I have created a solid body of work as a painter of landscapes in acrylics, watercolours and occasionally oils. Summers I paint Jasper, winters, Victoria. Visitors to the Brushfire Gallery from around the world have collected my work. I employ strong composition and bold colour in all my work. While I do use my photographs as reference (mostly on rainy days!), my paintings begin with a careful reading of my subject. First outlining the main shapes, I execute a value study on the canvas in warm shades, then gradually build up the colour notes. Working as a plein air painter has taught me to understand Nature as light, shadow, colour and form. Painting alone or with a group is always a challenge and an adventure. The journey may be a test for the artist, but creating each painting never fails to excite me. |
